Energy Pouches vs Nicotine Pouches: What Is the Difference?
They look the same and go in the same place, but energy pouches contain caffeine rather than nicotine. Here is how the two formats differ, and what food-safety regulators say about caffeine intake.
Energy pouches and nicotine pouches use the same format: a small pouch placed under the top lip. What they contain is different.
The key difference
- Nicotine pouches contain nicotine, an addictive substance, and are covered by UK nicotine-product law.
- Energy pouches are nicotine-free. Their main active ingredient is caffeine, and some brands add other functional ingredients. Check the can for the full list.

How much caffeine is sensible?
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) assessed caffeine safety in 2015. For healthy adults in the general population it concluded that:
- single doses up to 200mg of caffeine are unlikely to cause health concerns
- up to 400mg a day from all sources does not raise safety concerns, except for pregnant women
The daily figure covers caffeine from every source, including coffee, tea, energy drinks and energy pouches. If you use energy pouches, count them alongside everything else you drink.
Who should avoid them?
EFSA's opinion treats pregnant women as a separate group with a lower intake level. Caffeine products are also not suitable for children. If you are sensitive to caffeine or have a medical condition, speak to a healthcare professional.
Measuring strength
Energy pouch strength is given in mg of caffeine per pouch. It cannot be compared directly with a nicotine pouch's mg figure, because they measure different substances.
